Ursula is a schoolteacher, Gudrun a painter. Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen are sisters living in The Midlands in England in the 1910s. Ursula's character draws on Lawrence's wife Frieda and Gudrun's on Katherine Mansfield, while Rupert Birkin's has elements of Lawrence himself, and Gerald Crich is partly based on Mansfield's husband, John Middleton Murry. The novel ranges over the whole of British society before the time of the First World War and eventually concludes in the snows of the Tyrolean Alps. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an intense psychological and physical attraction between Gerald and Rupert.

Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula Brangwen and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. It is a sequel to his earlier novel The Rainbow (1915) and follows the continuing loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. The recognition of the two representative modern writers’ resemblances and differences fosters us to contemplate such significant, urgent topics as gender, modernity, and religion, to fill the rift between the East and the West, and to register the lasting cultural impacts the authors exert in today’s cultures. Lawrence and Eileen Chang through the four loves helps us to argue that love is a universal feeling but is encoded with different social, political, cultural, and metaphysical meanings in distinctive contexts. To discern what is common between otherwise different cultures, my project, built upon the research of other scholars but narrowed down to two representative writers, will examine four forms of love commonly experienced in one’s lifetime: Oedipal love, sexual love, adulterous love, and transcendental love. And yet, despite all these differences between English and Chinese cultures, there remain certain underlying aesthetic practices that connect the works of these two writers during the formative years of the twentieth century. One would expect a very different perspective on love from an aristocratic Chinese woman and an English working-class literary genius. Love, as a romantic passion in literature is never simply an emotion, but is inexorably intertwined with culture, authority, history, and ideology.
